Gill Ord’s (Abbey Fellow in Painting, October – December 2014) experience in Rome began by working on site, in underground spaces. These places were chosen for their particular qualities and depth of history. In the studio the paintings she has made are instinctive, but also intentionally about the experience of being in these ancient and layered locations.

L’esperienza di  Gill Ord (Abbey Fellow in Painting, ottobre – dicembre 2014) a Roma è iniziata lavorando in situ, in spazi sotterranei.

December Mostra/Meet the Artists…Rowena Harris

R Harris, Skin on Skin (Amputations no.1) , 2014

http://www.rowenaharris.com

Rowena Harris’ (Sainsbury Scholar in Painting & Sculpture  2014 15) work is sensitive to the changing nature of perception in the digital age, whereby an image-led language is often promoted through an ubiquitous online experience. Functioning against this language her work invites the viewer to engage with shifting perceptual methods across
sculptural or ergonomic forms, sound, video as well as, consciously, image. Hands, and their potential communicative gestures hold a special importance. She pursues the correlation or disjunction between gestures that deliver thought, employed by orators such as Cicero and Quintilian, and the contemporary hand that is fractured across digital space and instead suggests a removal of thought and a disembodied experience. The blog she is running alongside her time at the BSR can be found here: http://rowenaharrisblog.tumblr.com/

Nancy Milner (Abbey Scholar in Painting, October 2014 – June 2015) constructs paintings that use colour and form to investigate light and space in painting. She is challenged by what is at stake in current painting. In the process of painting, a dialogue
between her and the painting opens up a space where decisions are challenged and pushed. The finished paintings are an accumulation of the time taken to make them: a manifestation of thinking, memory and experience in the space of painting.

December Mostra/Meet the Artists…Florian Roithmayr

F Roithmayr, Lightbulbs, 2014http://www.motinternational.com/artists/florian-roithmayr/

Florian Roithmayr’s (Rome Fellow in Contemporary Art October – December 2014) work involves the presentation of hand-crafted homages to the process of moulding and casting, ranging from wall tiles in a German underground station to the cave markings of prehistoric man. Central to this process is the small gap between mould and cast, where the imprint as a gesture of contact and touch reappears throughout the history of sculpture. Working with low-value or discarded materials, Roithmayr often refers to the materiality of withdrawal, arrest or speechlessness, as either an escalation of commitment or the motivation for a different kind of production through surrender.

Emily Speed’s (Derek Hill Foundation Scholar October – December 2014) work is based around the relationship between the body and architecture. During her time in Rome she has been drawing as well as collecting images and segments of film that look at the architecturally-layered sites of Rome. Speed is especially interested in the city as a place where everyday life is constantly ruptured by fragments of the past.

Adam Nathaniel Furman‘s (Rome Prize-winner in Architecture, October 2014 – March 2015) project  The Roman Singularity is a multi-media exploration in text, computer drawing, animation, hand drawing, and ceramic, creating an alternative paper Rome for
the 21st century; a dream in the mode of Piranesi’s Ichnographiam Campi Martii, a peek out through the other side of Rome’s catastrophic and utterly incomparable reality-bending gravitational field, a new city from which fragments can be seen here in this exhibition. An in-depth presentation of this project can be viewed on his blog: http://theromansingularity.blogspot.it/
