Gregory Hodge’s (Australia Council Resident January–March 2015) practice engages with a process-based approach to painting by combining abstraction with illusionistic and perceptual painting techniques. Informed by the Baroque sensibility found in Rome’s decorative spaces, Hodge has developed new processes during this residency, constructing layered compositions from cut-out abstract motifs. By manipulating paint’s translucent and opaque qualities and incorporating trompe l’oeil shadow techniques, protruding gestural forms pop from the surface, folding and unfolding within the picture space.
